The main thing to remember about nerves is that they are natural; it’s probably more unusual if you never have them than if you do. Being behind the wheel of a car is a major thing, so it’s okay to be a little nervous, but being too nervous can cause problems. So what should you do if your stomach flips every time you think about having a driving lesson? Why is it doing this, and what can you do to help?
Are driving lesson nerves down to your instructor?
If you are being instructed by a professional, then you should feel safe and happy with them in the car. If you feel daunted by your instructor, and their presence is making you uncomfortable then this really needs to be addressed. It may simply be a misunderstanding, and the sooner the issue is raised, the sooner it can be sorted out. If you really have a clash of personalities with your instructor then you may need to swap to another.
Do you have a fear of crashing?
Remember that during your driving lesson your instructor has joint control with you, they won’t let you get into an accident. Although it may feel scary, especially during a first driving lesson, you are not in danger. Al l you need to concentrate on is following instructions, and learning all of the driving techniques you need to know.
Are you worried about other motorists?
Many people who are having a driving lesson worry about what other motorists might think. They worry that they are being too slow, or what might happen if they stall the car. This may be easier said than done, but just concentrate on the lesson and don’t stress about what anyone else is thinking. They were once in your position and they need to remember that.
What can help with driving lesson nerves?
If possible it’s a good idea to always take at least a couple of driving lessons each week. If you only take one lesson a week then you are going to have a lot of time between lessons for all the unwelcome nerves to build up again. While you are on a driving lesson it’s important to remember to take your time and get it right. If you feel as though you are starting to panic just breathe deeply and take a minute to think; rushing and stressing never helps. Just remember that soon you’ll have all the freedom of being able to take to the roads on your own.
